Location: 86 Margaret Street, London W1W 8TE

Date: 24th-25th August 2024

Time: 10:00am - 4:30pm BST

Duration: Taught over one weekend

Using techniques from Stumpwork, an intricate and pleasing embroidery practice that studies a three-dimensional use of threads, this class will teach you the framework you can use to translate a flower into a 3D embroidery. Originating from ecclesiastical embroidery prior to its rise in popularity in the 17th century Stumpwork has expanded to become a genre of embroidery that allows for much freedom and experimentation when creating work. This more modern form of the practice does not have to be restrained by strict guidelines but is more about the beauty of artistic embroidery, something that makes it perfect for interpreting those hard to capture moments of magic in nature.

Working from a kit you will learn the process of putting a design on to fabric and wiring it up to create a 3D shape for the petals and leaves. Then the class will progress on to the intricate details of combining thread painting and double sided stitching, you will work to refine your skills in both these areas whilst stitching the flowers 3D elements. It is not expected that you finish this piece within the class but the kit will come with in depth instructions on how to continue with your stitching and it will also be possible to contact Pippa for further help after.

All of the equipment and materials you need for this course are included in the cost of the class.

A prior knowledge of embroidery is recommended, this class is aimed at intermediate embroiderers
